Hiccup and Astrid

Hiccup and Astrid were not always a couple. At the beginning of the first movie, Hiccup had a crush on her. He was the smallest viking in the bunch and not quite popular with the rest of kids. Astrid always considered him irresponsible and clumsy. He always tried to prove himself to the Higher Order and never succeeded. During the first movie, though, she started to get curious on why Hiccup, a person who never got even a chance to kill a dragon, was getting so good at dealing with the dragons. She decided to follow him instead of trying to question him like the others did. What she found out changed her image of Hiccup.

Instead of learning how to kill dragons, Hiccup learned how to train a Night Fury after accidently shooting it down and was able to show Astrid that dragons were not dangerous like everyone thought. By the end of the movie, Astrid had grown fond of Hiccup. The first time she shows this was a small kiss to the cheek after Hiccup shows her that Toothless the Night Fury wasn't dangerous by forcing her to ride with him. The second kiss, which this time was on the lips, was at the end of the movie when Hiccup steps out of his hut and sees everyone.

Hiccup and Astrid's relationship wasn't a true couple relationship even with the ending of the first movie. Their relationship was almost a best friend type of relationship. Both were quite shy and awkward to even ackowledge what they had. There are other moments that showed that their relationship was actually starting to become more. The "Gift of the Night Fury" was the second time Astrid kissed Hiccup on the lips. Within the series "Dreamwork Dragons", even more scenes made their best friend type of relationship bloom to a more true couple relationship. For example, the third kiss on the lips from Astrid comes from the episode "Thawfest." Astrid was proud how Hiccup acted like a true Viking by losing a competition instead of trying to win it.

While I could go through every episode through the series "Dreamwork's Dragons" and point out each part that made them seem more like a couple, it is easier to say that during Season 4,5, and 6, there were episodes that had the most promising. Season 4 is where they finally decide to make it official while season 5 and 6 is where Hiccup finally gives Astrid his betrothal gift.

When the second movie comes out, nobdy had any idea that Astrid and Hiccup were betrothed to each other. Instead, everyone knew they were a couple. However, there were hints that they were something more especially when Stoick proudly yells "That's my future daughter in law!" during the Dragon Races. Throughout the second movie, Astrid is seen worried about Hiccup and close to him. At the end of the movie, Hiccup pulls Astrid close and gives her a long passionate kiss on the lips.

Their relationship is one that is complicated, loving, and protective. Hiccup is always there for Astrid and Astrid is always there for him.
